The Unified Government (UG) and the Kansas City, Kansas Fire Department (KCKFD) are inviting the community to take part in Light the Night, a national tribute honoring firefighters who died in the line of duty.

From Sunday, April 26, through Sunday, May 3, residents, businesses, and public buildings are encouraged to display red lights as a sign of remembrance, unity, and respect.

KCKFD will participate by lighting the Municipal Building and several fire stations in red throughout the week. Community members can join by replacing porch lights with red bulbs, lighting up storefronts, or sharing messages of support for firefighters and their families.

The campaign is held in connection with National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend, which ends Sunday, May 3. International Fire Fighters Day follows on Monday, May 4.

This year, three KCKFD members will serve on the Services Team supporting families of fallen firefighters. Across the country, 95 firefighters will be honored for making the ultimate sacrifice in service to others. About 110 additional firefighters will be honored after dying from occupational cancer.

Light the Night also serves as a reminder of the importance of fire safety, preparedness, and community support. KCKFD is encouraging residents to shine a light in remembrance and help ensure the courage and sacrifice of firefighters are never forgotten.
