The recognition highlights local work to support residents at every stage of life.
The Unified Government (UG) has earned the Silver Level Designation through the Communities for All Ages (CFAA) program.
The award was presented April 17 during the First Suburbs Coalition meeting in Raytown, Missouri. The designation recognizes work by Kansas City, Kansas to better support residents of all ages through planning, services, programs, and community partnerships.
Kansas City, Kansas has participated in the CFAA program since 2023, beginning with the inclusion of age-friendly principles in Plan KCK, the city’s comprehensive plan. The UG earned Bronze Level designation in 2024 and completed the Silver Level requirements in late 2025.
“I have been honored to work alongside our Unified Government departments, along with some community agencies, to complete an analysis of the services we provide that can benefit residents of all ages here in Kansas City, Kansas,” said At-Large District 1 Commissioner Melissa Bynum. “Through this process we are better positioned to make sure we prioritize Aging in Community in our policies, procedures, practices and plans, and work to create a community where everyone can age here with what they need to thrive. I’m proud we have achieved the Silver Level and look forward to working toward Gold!”
To complete the Silver Level process, the UG held five self-assessment meetings focused on CFAA’s areas of impact. Those areas include public outdoor spaces and buildings, housing and commercial development, transportation and mobility, social engagement, communication and contribution, and community and health services.
The process included a task force made up of elected officials, UG staff from multiple departments, and community partner agencies.
“The Silver Level process was a great opportunity to inventory all of the services we offer that support residents of all ages, but also to better align our efforts across departments and externally to partner agencies,” said UG Long Range Planner Alyssa Marcy. “We have been incorporating Communities for All Ages into all of our planning efforts along the way, like Plan KCK, Vision Zero and the Zoning Code Update.”
More information about the UG’s work to support residents of all ages is expected as the community continues building on the CFAA process.
