Wyandotte County residents will have one last opportunity this year to safely dispose of unwanted household chemicals and materials during the final Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection event of 2025.
According to the Unified Government, the event will take place Saturday, Oct. 18, from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the HHW Collection Center, 2443 S. 88th St., Kansas City, Kansas. The program is free for Wyandotte County residents. Proof of residency, such as a driver’s license or BPU bill, is required, and the service is not available to businesses or non-profit organizations.
Residents are encouraged to arrive early, as the site will close promptly at 1 p.m.
Items Accepted Include:
Auto batteries, used motor oil, brake fluid, carburetor cleaner, degreasers, gasoline and fuels, furniture stripper, solvent-based glues, latex and oil-based paints, paint thinner, putty, grout, caulk, roofing tar, stain, varnish, lacquer, aerosol products, drain and oven cleaners, mothballs, nail polish remover, polish with solvents, spot remover, and small propane cylinders.
Items Not Accepted:
Electronics, smoke detectors, ammunition, asbestos, brush killers, compressed gas cylinders (helium), explosives, infectious waste, radioactive materials, laboratory chemicals, PCBs, and wood preservatives containing chlorophenols. These items will be turned away at the event.
The UG reminds residents that proper disposal of household hazardous waste helps protect both the environment and public health. Dumping or placing these items in regular trash can contaminate soil, water, and air.
The 2026 HHW event schedule will be announced early next year. For more information, visit the Solid Waste Management webpage, call 3-1-1, or email info@wycokck.org.
