Public Invited to Second Elevating KCK Open House on Future of Kansas River Crossings

The Unified Government (UG) of Wyandotte County/Kansas City, Kansas, and project partners are inviting the public to take part in the second open house for the Elevating KCK River Crossing Study. The event will be held Tuesday, Sept. 30, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Children’s Campus of Kansas City, 444 Minnesota Ave., 3rd Floor. Free parking will be available in Lot #4 near the campus.

According to the UG, the Elevating KCK study is focused on the Kansas Avenue and Central Avenue bridges, both of which have been closed to traffic in recent years due to safety concerns. The closures have forced detours for drivers, limited access for pedestrians and cyclists, and added pressure to other downtown crossings.

The project team is reviewing whether repair, replacement, or removal would best serve the community’s long-term needs.

At the open house, residents will have the opportunity to:

  • View proposed design options for both bridges.
  • Learn how feedback from more than 380 residents shaped the ideas now being presented.
  • Share additional feedback through a short survey, available both in person and online.
  • Speak directly with project staff.

There will not be a formal presentation. Attendees are welcome to drop in at any time during the three-hour session.

For those who cannot attend in person, meeting materials and the online survey will be available starting Sept. 30 at kansasrivercrossingstudy.com. Questions can also be directed to info@kansasrivercrossingstudy.com.

Officials said community input will help guide the study team as they refine options and work with local, state, and federal partners to develop a financial plan later this fall.
