The Kansas City Kansas Community College Art Gallery has opened “Nocturnes.” This is a new exhibit by glass artist Kate Clements. It is on view through Nov. 14. According to the college, a public reception will be held from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 19 in the gallery, located in Lower Jewell next to the deli.
The reception will feature a performance by musician Josué Estrada, a Wichita-based trumpeter and sound architect. According to KCKCC, Estrada’s work echoes themes of life as a modern Chicano in the Midwest. It invites collective healing through sound.
In “Nocturnes,” Clements guides viewers into the dark to discover imagined creatures and forms. Inspired by late-night insect study and the striking colors of poisonous minerals, she creates delicate, mirror-like shapes in glass. The work explores the line between beauty and fear. It examines the boundary between dreams and nightmares. We feel a pull toward things that are mysterious or risky.
