The Kansas City Board of Public Utilities (BPU) is alerting residents. There are reports of individuals posing as BPU employees. These impostors are trying to gain access to homes and properties.
According to BPU, legitimate employees can be identified by several key markers. They drive clearly marked BPU vehicles. Typically, they wear clothing with the BPU logo. They also carry an official photo ID badge.
Customers approached by someone claiming to represent BPU are advised to request to see their badge. If the individual refuses, residents should contact local law enforcement. If their behavior seems suspicious, they can also call the BPU Outage Dispatch Line at (913) 573-9522. The line is monitored in real-time. Customers can leave details such as the date, time, location, and a description of the individual. BPU says this helps confirm whether the person is an employee and allows coordination with law enforcement if needed.
In a statement, BPU emphasized its commitment to public safety. It urged residents to remain cautious. They should report any suspicious encounters.
