A local youth program focused on hands-on learning and animal care is receiving new support through a $5,000 grant from the BPU Charity Golf Tournament.
The Wyandotte County 4-H Rabbit Project, known locally as the WyCo Hoppin Dottes, will use the funding to expand educational opportunities for youth participants and improve operations at the Wyandotte County Fair rabbit show. The grant will help purchase grooming and care equipment used during instructional sessions, as well as supplies needed to safely and efficiently manage the fair exhibit.
The 4-H Rabbit Project provides instruction in rabbit care, husbandry, and showmanship while emphasizing responsibility, animal welfare, and confidence-building skills. It also offers an accessible livestock experience for families who may not have the land or resources required for larger animals, allowing more young people to participate in agricultural education.
Organizers say the new equipment will improve both the quality of instruction and the overall experience for participants. Enhanced tools allow youth to practice proper techniques, understand animal health needs, and prepare more effectively for competitive events.
Beyond the technical skills involved, programs like the WyCo Hoppin Dottes help strengthen community connections. Monthly meetings bring together youth, parents, and volunteers, creating shared learning experiences that extend beyond the project itself.
