Fleet Services is a division of the Unified Government’s Public Works Department. It has earned an Honorable Mention in the 2025 “100 Best Fleets in the Americas” program. The National Association of Fleet Administrators (NAFA) presents the recognition. It highlights innovation, efficiency, and service excellence among public and private fleet operations across North and South America.
The annual competition evaluates applicants on 12 criteria, including technology use, financial stewardship, employee development, turnaround time, and sustainability.
“The recognition from NAFA is a huge honor for our team,” said Fleet Manager Russ Owens. “Over the past few years, we have rethought how we operate, from upgrading software and streamlining processes to reshaping our teamwork, accountability, culture, and customer service. This award is validation that we are on the right path.”
Fleet Services manages maintenance and repairs for more than 1,300 vehicles and pieces of equipment that support UG operations. The 25-member team services patrol cars, snowplows, dump trucks, construction equipment, tractors, trailers, and other essential vehicles used by departments including the Sheriff’s Office, Police, Public Health, Environmental Services, and Street Maintenance.
Their work ranges from routine maintenance to engine overhauls and hydraulic system repairs. Owens said that while much of the team’s work happens behind the scenes, its impact is felt across the community.
“Fleet may not always be visible to the public, but the team’s impact is everywhere,” Owens said. “Our goal is to make sure every department we support can rely on the vehicles and equipment they need to do their jobs effectively, and we are proud of our role in making that possible.”
