BPU Partners for Solar Energy in Kansas

The Board of Public Utilities (BPU) has partnered with the Kansas Municipal Energy Agency. They also joined the Kansas Electric Power Cooperative Inc. in signing a power purchase agreement with Ninnescah Flats Solar, LLC, a subsidiary of NextEra Energy Resources.

The deal secures energy from the Ninnescah Flats Solar Energy Center in Pratt County. This facility is capable of producing up to 200 megawatts of electricity. Commercial operations are expected to begin in 2026. BPU leaders say the agreement supports efforts to diversify the utility’s energy mix while offering stability for ratepayers.

“This agreement is an important step toward providing reliable, cost-conscious power while investing in sustainable resources,” said Andrew Ferris, BPU’s chief financial officer.

The construction of the project created about 200 temporary jobs. It is expected to generate millions in new tax revenue for Pratt County once it is operational.
