Prepare for Bitter Cold KCK: Road Conditions & Tips

Temperatures are plunging into the single digits. Wind chills between -10 and 10 degrees are expected through Sunday. The Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas (UG) is urging residents to prepare for slick road conditions. There may be delays in some services.

According to the National Weather Service, treated surfaces may refreeze overnight. The bitter cold reduces the effectiveness of road salt.

UG snow crews began plowing Hot and Secondary Routes at 3 a.m. Wednesday. Hot Routes include heavily traveled corridors such as Parallel Parkway, along with roads that serve hospitals, schools, and emergency services. Secondary Routes connect neighborhoods to those primary corridors, while local Neighborhood Routes are plowed last.

The UG says the overnight shift is on duty, focusing on treating plowed Hot and Secondary Routes with salt. Once those areas are complete, crews will move into neighborhoods for plowing before returning to apply additional salt treatments.

No two storms are the same. Public Works officials note it typically takes 12–24 hours to plow and treat Hot and Secondary Routes once snow ends. Neighborhood Routes make up the largest portion of the city’s 2,400 lane miles. Clearing these routes may take up to 48 hours.

Resident Reminders

  • Avoid parking on the street so plows can pass.
  • If street parking is necessary, park close to the curb.
  • Drive cautiously and allow extra travel time.
  • Shovel snow to the right side of driveways (when facing the street) to avoid plows pushing snow back in.
  • Keep children away from snow drifts near the roadway.

Service Impacts
Waste Management has delayed residential trash and recycling collection starting Wednesday, Feb. 12. Residents should check updates regularly, as further service changes are possible.
