The Kansas City, Kansas Fire Department (KCKFD) has confirmed that Fire Station 20 is safe to occupy. This confirmation follows a structural inspection earlier today. Crews have returned to the station, and the engineer’s full report is expected by the end of the week.
Concerns about the Muncie fire station were first raised on January 9, when cracks were discovered in load-bearing walls. Out of caution, Fire Chief Dennis Rubin temporarily relocated crews. The Unified Government’s Facilities and Building Manager arranged for a structural engineer to evaluate the building.
During the relocation period, Pumper 20 was stationed at Fire Station 2 in Midtown. Medic 20 was moved to Fire Station 15 in Fairfax. Signs were also posted at Station 20 directing residents to call 9-1-1 if emergency assistance was needed. Surrounding stations covered the Muncie area during the evaluation to ensure uninterrupted service.
The KCKFD expects to share more information once the official inspection report is finalized.
