Crews working through the night as temperatures fall into the teens
Public Works crews will continue winter weather operations overnight, according to the Unified Government (UG). This is necessary as pavement temperatures remain below freezing. Snow has ended for now, but slick spots are expected through early Tuesday.
The Snow Crew has moved into split shifts to provide 24-hour coverage. Twenty-two team members will be on the road throughout the city. Zone 1 on the east side will have six crew members. Zone 2 on the south side will have five. Zone 3 in the mid-town area will have five team members on duty. Zone 4 on the west side will have six team members on duty.
The overnight shift will work from 7:30 PM to 7:30 AM. Crews will keep plowing and treating Hot and Secondary Routes. They may move into Neighborhood Routes if conditions improve enough to safely expand coverage.
Salt may be less effective overnight because pavement temperatures are expected to stay below freezing until mid-morning Tuesday. Most Hot and Secondary Routes have already been treated and plowed once today. Overnight work will focus on maintaining traction and addressing areas that refreeze.
Hot Routes are major streets such as State Avenue and Parallel Parkway, along with streets that reach police and fire stations, hospitals, and schools. Secondary Routes link neighborhoods to Hot Routes. Neighborhood Routes include local residential streets, cul-de-sacs, and dead ends.
Residents who must travel are encouraged to slow down, allow for longer stopping time, and give crews plenty of space to work safely.
