Kansas City, Kansas residents now have more ways to recycle everyday items at home. WM, the Unified Government’s (UG) solid waste service provider, now accepts paper beverage cups. Many types of plastic drink cups are also accepted in curbside recycling carts.
This update is part of a national effort supported by manufacturers, recycling centers, and sustainability groups. The shared goal is to make recycling easier and to keep more materials out of landfills.
Residents can now recycle paper beverage cups. This includes coffee or fountain drink cups. They can also recycle plastic cups made from polypropylene, also called PP. Foam cups, rigid number six plastic, lids, straws, and cup stoppers should still be placed in the trash.
Residents should empty all liquids and remove lids, straws, and stoppers before placing cups in the cart. Keeping items clean helps the recycling process run smoothly.
“Even small improvements make a big difference when it comes to recycling,” said Diana Miles, UG Solid Waste Manager. “This update gives residents one more way to reduce waste at home. We encourage everyone to take a moment to empty and separate their cups before placing them in the cart. Those few seconds help keep the recycling process working smoothly for our community.”
According to WM, companies across the country are moving away from foam and choosing recyclable paper and plastic cups. WM has also invested in improved sorting technology at recycling facilities, which helps staff identify and separate cups more accurately. These changes help turn recycled cups into new products, such as cardboard boxes, paint cans, garden materials, and plastic lumber.
By recycling more materials at home, residents help keep neighborhoods cleaner and support community sustainability.
