The holiday season is a time of celebration. It can also bring added stress. This is especially true when family dynamics are difficult. K-State Research and Extension Wyandotte County is offering practical advice. This will help residents navigate the season with more peace and understanding. They focus on creating positive holiday experiences.
According to Family and Consumer Sciences Agent Chiquita Miller, the key to enjoying the holidays is setting realistic expectations. “Family gatherings don’t have to be perfect,” Miller said. “Focusing on creating a pleasant atmosphere instead of solving every problem can make the time together much more enjoyable.”
Miller recommends identifying topics or behaviors that may cause tension and setting healthy boundaries before gatherings begin. “Boundaries protect our mental health,” she explained. “They allow us to nurture relationships without becoming overwhelmed.”
Time management is another important part of reducing stress. Residents are encouraged to plan visits in ways that allow for balance. They can schedule shorter gatherings or take breaks during the day. Practicing empathy and patience can also go a long way. “Sometimes people’s behavior stems from struggles we don’t see,” Miller said. “Giving grace and choosing calm responses can make a real difference.”
K-State Extension also recommends building a support system. Talking with friends or a trusted family member before and after gatherings can help reduce anxiety. Activities such as reading, exercise, or spending quiet time outdoors can also help keep emotions in check.
If conflicts arise, it’s okay to step away. “You can’t control others’ behavior, but you can control your own reactions,” Miller said.
After the holidays, taking time to reflect can help families prepare for next year. Thinking about what worked well and what could be improved can make future celebrations smoother.
