The Wyandotte County office of K-State Research and Extension has welcomed Dylan Parsley as its new horticulture agent. Parsley brings a blend of hands-on agricultural experience. He also has academic training. He hopes this will inspire residents to take a fresh look at gardening and plant science.
Originally from Bloomington, Indiana, Parsley moved to Kansas in 2016 while serving in the U.S. Army at Fort Riley. After completing his service, he chose to make Kansas his permanent home. He continued his education at Kansas State University. There, he earned a bachelor’s degree in horticulture production and a minor in plant pathology.
“I discovered a passion for plant sciences I never knew I had,” Parsley said. “It’s rewarding to share that with the community and to help people connect with nature through horticulture.”
Before joining the Extension team, Parsley worked at Loma Vista Nursery. There, he grew woody perennials and ornamental trees. Later, he managed an apple orchard. He oversaw crop planning, harvest, and plant health.
Since stepping into his new role, Parsley has partnered with the Wyandotte County Extension Master Gardeners. Together, they maintain and enhance several public garden projects. A recent highlight includes officially taking responsibility for the Cooper-Foreman Heirloom Garden on the Kansas City Kansas Community College campus.
The garden showcases a variety of annuals, perennials, shrubs, and fruit trees. Many of these plants date back to before 1924. This assortment reflects the gardening traditions of that era. The Master Gardeners also recently installed a new ADA-compliant stone walkway to make the space more accessible for all visitors.
“It’s exciting to see the Master Gardeners’ dedication,” Parsley said. “Their work keeps this garden thriving and ensures it’s a place everyone can enjoy.”
