Residents impacted by recent severe weather will have a chance this weekend. They can dispose of flood-damaged household items free of charge. The Unified Government announced it will host a Flood Damage Disposal Event on Saturday, July 26, from 8 a.m. to noon at Indian Springs (47th & Orville, KCK).
The event is open to Wyandotte County residents on a first-come, first-served basis. Waste Management is donating dumpster service, though space is limited. Only flood-damaged household items will be accepted. The following will not be taken: hazardous waste, appliances, loose trash, or yard and storm debris.
Solid Waste Manager Diana Miles said the event is meant to provide relief for households still recovering from storm damage. “We know many of our residents were hit hard by the recent storms,” Miles said. “This disposal event gives people a quick, no-cost way to get rid of water-damaged household items. We’re grateful to Waste Management for stepping up to help us make this happen.”
Residents bringing items should be prepared to unload them. Staff will be on-site to direct traffic and confirm eligibility.
For storm debris such as branches, leaves, or yard waste, the Unified Government reminds residents that several other disposal options remain available:
- Curbside pickup on normal trash day, with yard waste bagged (under 50 pounds) and limbs bundled no longer than four feet.
- Recycling & Yard Waste Center (3241 Park Drive, KCK) – free for residents with proof of residency, open Thursday–Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
- Johnson County Landfill (17955 Holliday Drive, Shawnee) – accepts yard waste Monday–Friday, 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
