The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) has started work. They are working on a major bridge deck replacement along K-5 in northern Kansas City, Kansas.
The project focuses on the K-5 bridge over the Union Pacific Railroad. According to KDOT, it is located just south of Sunshine Road. Starting Monday, May 13, all northbound lanes of K-5 between 10th Street and Sunshine Road are closed to traffic. All southbound lanes of K-5 between 10th Street and Sunshine Road are also closed to traffic.
The bridge is expected to reopen in December 2025, with full project completion set for May 2026.
Detour Routes
- Northbound K-5: Drivers will be directed east onto K-5/Sunshine Road, south on Fairfax Trafficway, and westbound onto I-70. From there, motorists can connect to I-635 northbound and rejoin K-5/Leavenworth Road.
- Southbound K-5: Motorists will use I-635/K-5 northbound to Horizons Parkway in Missouri, travel east on MO-9/NW River Park Drive, and then south on I-635 and U.S. 69 before reconnecting with K-5.
Electronic message boards and roadway signs are already in place to guide traffic. KDOT noted that traffic control will include barricades, channelizers, and changeable message boards to keep drivers informed.
Clarkson Construction of Kansas City, Missouri, is leading the $12.5 million project. Crews will work during daylight hours Monday through Friday, with occasional Saturday work.
