Wyandotte County Government Earns Top Financial Reporting Award

The Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas (UG) has received recognition once again. It is commended for its commitment to transparency and accountability in financial reporting.

The Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting. This was for the 2023 fiscal year. This was according to the UG. The honor was given for the UG’s Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR). This marks the 24th consecutive year the UG has received this award.

Independent financial audits are conducted each year by an outside firm, currently Forvismazars. The GFOA recognized the UG’s 2023 ACFR for meeting high standards in financial accounting, reporting, and compliance. As part of the process, auditors also tested internal controls to ensure proper checks and balances are in place.

“There is an extensive amount of work for the team to provide all required information to the auditors to review and test,” said Dr. Shelley Kneuvean, UG Chief Financial Officer. “The Unified Government has an extremely dedicated staff of financial professionals that have worked to ensure financial accountability. This award recognizes that effort and notes that the report had no findings. As we work to support the goals of financial sustainability and transparency, having a solid clean audit delivered on time will be a goal for fiscal year 2024 and beyond.”

The UG noted that the 2024 fiscal year closed on December 31, 2024, and the independent audit is already underway. Forvismazars is conducting the review, which is expected to be completed by June 2025. A separate single audit covering all federal grants is also in progress and should be finalized by September 2025.
