The Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas (UG) joined the Kansas City Board of Public Utilities (BPU) this week to recognize Drinking Water Week, observed May 4–10, 2025. According to the UG, the official proclamation highlights the role safe, reliable drinking water plays in public health and everyday life.
“Drinking Water Week is a time to celebrate our water journey—from source to treatment to tap,” said BPU General Manager Jeremy Ash. “This year, we invite our community to explore the science behind the system and recognize the skilled people who guarantee every drop meets the highest safety and quality standards.”
According to BPU, staff will engage residents across Wyandotte County with education about how water is sourced, treated, and delivered. The utility noted that 2025 also marks the 25th anniversary of the Nearman Water Treatment Plant, which opened in 2000 and remains the backbone of BPU’s water operations.
BPU said the annual observance, led by the American Water Works Association, is celebrated by utilities and local governments across North America through tours, classroom visits, and hands-on demonstrations.
