Volunteers Needed for ‘Sound the Alarm’ Smoke Alarm Installations April 12

The Kansas City, Kansas Fire Department (KCKFD) and the American Red Cross are calling for volunteers. They need help with the fourth “Sound the Alarm” event. This event is on Saturday, April 12, 2025.

According to the Unified Government, the initiative will take place from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the Strawberry Hill and Turtle Hill neighborhoods. Volunteers will go door-to-door sharing fire safety information and installing smoke alarms in homes at no cost.

Since the program began in October 2023, more than 500 smoke alarms have been installed across Kansas City, Kansas.

“A properly installed and regularly tested smoke alarm saves lives from the wrath of unwanted fires. Research by the National Fire Protection Association reveals that smoke alarms cut fire deaths by 50%,” said KCKFD Fire Chief Dennis Rubin. “We are excited to be working with the American Red Cross to bring Sound the Alarm to the Strawberry and Turtle Hill communities. This service is free of charge and focuses on the Fire Department’s mission of Preventing Harm. We will reach approximately 400 homes in these two neighborhoods to install smoke alarms.”

Households in Strawberry Hill or Turtle Hill may request a free installation. They can do this by calling the KCKFD at (913) 573-5971. Alternatively, they can text (913) 991-7002.

Volunteer Opportunities
Those interested in volunteering can check in at KCKFD Headquarters, 815 N. 6th Street, on the day of the event. Registration and training will begin at 7:45 a.m. for morning volunteers and 11:45 a.m. for afternoon volunteers.

Participants may volunteer for a half-day or stay for the entire event.
