Drivers should expect lane reductions and ramp closures along I-435 as a bridge repair project gets underway in Wyandotte County.
The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) stated that work began Monday, March 24. The work is on multiple bridges between the Kansas River and the Missouri River. The project includes patching and resurfacing on several bridges, including:
- Northbound I-435 bridge over Connor Creek
- Southbound I-435 bridge over Leavenworth Road
- Southbound I-435 bridge over Georgia Avenue
- Southbound I-435 bridge over Parallel Parkway
- Southbound I-435 bridge over 98th Street
- Northbound and southbound I-435 bridges over Swartz Road
For the duration of the project, northbound I-435 traffic from K-32 to Swartz Road will be reduced to two lanes. Also, southbound I-435 traffic from I-70 to Swartz Road will be reduced to two lanes. Traffic will shift to inside or outside lanes as work progresses.
Ramp closures will occur in phases:
- Phase 1: Kansas Avenue to southbound I-435 entrance ramp, and southbound I-435 to Kansas Avenue exit ramp.
- Phase 2: Westbound Parallel Parkway to southbound I-435 entrance ramp, and southbound I-435 to eastbound Parallel Parkway exit ramp.
- Phase 3: Eastbound and westbound Leavenworth Road to southbound I-435 entrance ramps, and southbound I-435 to eastbound Leavenworth exit ramp.
Construction will take place on weekdays during daylight hours, with occasional Saturday work. Message boards, cones, and barriers will guide drivers through the work zone.
The $7.17 million project is being completed by Comanche Construction, Inc., of Olathe, and is expected to be finished by May 2026.
