Free Mulch for Wyandotte County Residents: Eco-Friendly Landscaping

Wyandotte County residents can now pick up free mulch. This is available through a new pilot program. The Unified Government’s Public Works Solid Waste Management team offers this program.

According to the Unified Government, the mulch is made from locally collected yard waste. It is natural, untreated, and dye-free. This makes it an eco-friendly option for landscaping and gardening compared to many commercial products.

“The Free Mulch Pilot Program is a great way to give back to the community while reducing waste,” said Diana Miles, Solid Waste Manager. “By repurposing yard debris collected at the center, we’re not only helping residents improve their gardens but also supporting sustainability efforts in Wyandotte County.”

Residents interested in picking up mulch must show proof of residency, such as a BPU bill or driver’s license. The mulch is available on a first-come, first-served basis. It is offered from Thursday, April 10, through Saturday, October 25, on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Residents are responsible for loading and hauling their own mulch.

The Recycling & Yard Waste Center is located at 3241 Park Drive in Kansas City, Kansas. It will be closed April 18–19, June 19, July 4, and November 27–28 for holidays.

In addition to mulch, the facility accepts glass, mixed paper, and cardboard. They also take plastics (#1–7), food and beverage cans, and grass clippings. Leaves, branches (up to four feet), and stumps (up to 12 inches in diameter) are accepted as well.
