New Website for Vision Zero: Improving Kansas City Roadway Safety

The Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas has launched a new project website. Its purpose is to support the Vision Zero Action Plan. This is a countywide initiative to improve roadway safety in Kansas City, Bonner Springs, Edwardsville, and Lake Quivira.

According to the Unified Government, the website introduces Vision Zero and provides an overview of local transportation safety concerns. It also features an interactive engagement map. Residents can identify locations they believe pose risks for pedestrians, bicyclists, or motorists. Feedback submitted through the map will help shape the final safety analysis and guide action steps.

“Our community is the first line of input for where they encounter safety issues and crashes in their daily travels,” said Alyssa Marcy, UG Long-Range Planner. “We need that input to ensure the Vision Zero Action Plan provides a comprehensive and clear understanding of the areas where safety is a concern.”

Alongside public feedback, a Steering Committee has been formed. Its tasks are to review existing conditions, set goals, and connect with community groups. The committee will focus on safety challenges near schools and in both urban and rural areas.

Vision Zero, first launched in Sweden in 1997, is an international strategy to eliminate traffic fatalities and severe injuries. It was identified as a top priority in the goDotte Mobility Strategy and the PlanKCK Comprehensive Plan update.

Community members can learn more and add comments to the engagement map by visiting wycokck.org/visionzero.
