Unified Government (UG) officials announced that all government offices will reopen to the public on Wednesday, Jan. 8, at 8 a.m. following significant progress in snow removal operations.
As of Tuesday afternoon, crews had cleared more than 70 percent of the county’s 134 neighborhood routes. They have just 38 left to complete. All secondary and “hot” routes, high-priority roads such as those serving hospitals, schools, and emergency services, have been cleared.
“Multiple departments have been working around the clock to catch up on snow removal,” according to the UG. “With the historic volume of snow and ice, conditions remain challenging. Residents are urged to use caution on the roads.”
Public safety teams remain busy. Police and fire departments have responded to hundreds of calls since the storm began, including more than 75 vehicle crashes. The Kansas City, Kansas Fire Department has also transported unhoused residents to warming shelters. This action helps minimize exposure. The Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Office reported that all operations continue to run smoothly.
The KCK cold weather shelter will remain open Tuesday night at 645 Nebraska Avenue. The shelter opens at 6:30 p.m. and has a capacity of 40. Guests are discharged at 7 a.m. The shelter hotline is (913) 725-0079.
