Apply for Wyandotte County Tax Relief Programs by April 15

The Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas (UG) is reminding eligible residents that applications are now open for the 2025 tax rebate programs. The programs include relief on utilities, property taxes, and sales tax. The program runs from January 2 through April 15, 2025, and outreach is underway to help residents apply.

Who Is Eligible?
The programs are designed for Wyandotte County seniors. They are also for individuals living with disabilities. Their household income must be $42,600 or less. Updated qualifications and documentation requirements have been posted by the State of Kansas and can be reviewed at wycokck.org/taxrebates.

  • BPU PILOT Relief and Property Tax Rebate Program: Eligible Wyandotte County residents may qualify for a refund. They can receive a refund of BPU PILOT charges if they are BPU customers. Alternatively, they may qualify for a portion of their property taxes if they are property owners.
  • Utility and Sales Tax Rebate Program: Kansas City, Kansas residents may qualify for a rebate. This applies to franchise fees collected on utilities. These utilities include gas, Internet, cable, and phone bills. The 2024 sales tax rebate for eligible applicants is $200.

What Documents Are Needed?
Applicants should be prepared with:

  • Full contact information (name, address, date of birth, phone number).
  • Proof of disability status (if applicable) and the agency providing benefits (Social Security, Railroad, or Veterans Administration).
  • Proof of income for all persons in the household for 2024 is required. This can include W-2 or 1099 forms. Other forms can be Social Security statements, Railroad retirement statements, and Veterans disability statements. Additional sources are bank interest, food stamp awards, or child support income.

How to Apply

  • By Mail: Send eligibility documents to the UG Clerk’s Office (701 N. 7th Street, Suite 323, Kansas City, KS 66101). All documents will be returned once reviewed.
  • In Person: One-on-one appointments are available to help residents complete the application process and answer questions. To schedule, call 3-1-1. Free transportation may also be available with 48-hour notice.

Appointment Locations

  • UG Clerk’s Office, Municipal Building, 3rd Floor: Weekdays, 8:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m.
  • Eisenhower Community Center: Tuesdays, 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m.
  • Joe E. Amayo Community Center: Thursdays, 9:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m.
  • County Annex Building: Fridays, 1:00 p.m.–4:30 p.m.

Walk-ins are also welcome at the UG Clerk’s Office during regular business hours.

Supporting Our Community
Last year, the UG processed 1,343 rebate applications totaling nearly $900,000 in assistance. Since launching this year’s outreach efforts on January 2, more than $220,000 has already been processed.

“This program provides meaningful financial relief for our seniors and residents living with disabilities,” said UG Clerk’s Office staff. “We encourage everyone who may qualify to schedule an appointment or walk in to apply before the April 15 deadline.”
