The Unified Government (UG) Transit Department has announced updates to its Paratransit service policy, effective Oct. 6, 2025.
According to the UG, the RideKC Freedom program provides origin-to-destination transportation for individuals with eligible disabilities and for residents age 65 and older within Wyandotte County. The service includes both ADA and Non-ADA Paratransit options and requires prior application and approval.
The latest policy changes focus on rider safety, personal items, and mobility equipment:
- Shopping Bags and Personal Items: Passengers may only bring items they can independently carry on and off the vehicle. Drivers are not responsible for loading or unloading shopping bags, carts, or other personal belongings.
- Powered Wheelchairs and Scooters: If a powered wheelchair or scooter becomes inoperable, drivers cannot manually push or move the device due to safety and liability concerns. In these cases, passengers must arrange alternate transportation, such as non-emergency medical transport.
“Our top priority is ensuring the safety of both our passengers and our operators,” said UG Transit Department Director Deasiray Bush. “These updates help set clear expectations for what riders can bring onboard and define the responsibilities of our operators. By being mindful of personal items and understanding the limits of operator duties, we can continue to provide safe, reliable, and accessible paratransit service to our community.”
UG officials said the policy changes reaffirm the department’s ongoing commitment to safety, accessibility, and dependable service for residents who rely on RideKC Freedom.
