Wyandotte County residents can dispose of old furniture, mattresses, and other large household items at no charge.
Wyandotte County residents will get another chance in early May. They can clear out old furniture, mattresses, and other bulky household items. These items do not fit into normal trash pickup.
The Unified Government’s Public Works Department will host the first WyCo Dumpster Days event of 2026 on Friday, May 1. The event will continue on Saturday, May 2, at Indian Springs near 47th Street and Orville Avenue in Kansas City, Kansas.
The event will run from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. both days.
For many residents, that means a rare chance to get rid of large items without paying a disposal fee. Bulky household items will be accepted at no charge for Wyandotte County residents.
“WyCo Dumpster Days gives residents a practical way to get rid of bulky items and certain electronics that cannot go out through normal collection,” Solid Waste Manager Diana Miles said. “It is one more way we can help residents clean up their properties and support cleaner neighborhoods.”
Accepted items include mattresses, furniture, general appliances, fixtures, microwaves, freezers, televisions, and similar household items.
The event is open only to Wyandotte County residents. Attendees must show proof of residency. This proof should be a document with their name and address. Examples include a driver’s license or a utility bill.
Some electronics will be accepted for a fee. CRT computer screens and CRT televisions will cost $40 each. LCD and flat-screen TVs will cost $20 each. Payments must be made in cash, and residents are required to bring exact change.
Not everything will be accepted. Public Works said the event will not take household hazardous waste, paint, or refrigerators. Other items containing Freon, yard waste, and storm debris will also not be accepted. This includes batteries, loose trash, and food waste as well. Medical waste, tires, glass and plastics recycling, and construction and demolition debris are also prohibited. Items from businesses, nonprofits, and other commercial entities also will not be accepted.
Residents can get rid of yard waste, storm debris, or glass or paper recycling by using the Recycling and Yard Waste Center at 3241 Park Drive. That site is open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday through Saturday through Dec. 20, except on holidays.
