Mindful Mondays Can Make the Start of the Week a Little Easier

Simple Habits Help Reduce Monday Stress and Set a Healthier Tone.

For many people, Monday morning feels like the hardest part of the week. It is when school and work start back up, alarms ring earlier than we would like, and long weekends or vacations suddenly give way to full schedules again. Even people who enjoy their jobs or classes can find that first day back a little heavy.

According to Wyandotte County K-State Research and Extension, that “Monday feeling” is common and does not mean anything is wrong with you. It often reflects the jump from a slower pace on Saturday and Sunday to a faster pace on Monday. When weekends are busy, or when work or school feel stressful, the change can feel even sharper.

Family and Consumer Sciences Agent Chiquita Miller encourages residents to try “Mindful Mondays” as one simple way to ease that transition. Living more mindfully means paying attention to the present moment, noticing how you feel, and making small choices that support your health instead of running on autopilot. Over time, those choices start to feel natural, no matter what day it is.

The Extension team shared eleven ideas to try on a Monday. Some focus on planning, like making a short goal list for the week so you know what matters most. Others are about caring for your body, such as stretching when you get out of bed, eating a healthy breakfast, or taking a short walk outside to notice the weather, trees, and sounds in your neighborhood. There are also ideas that support your mind and emotions, like writing in a journal for 15 minutes, trying yoga or quiet meditation, or pausing to show gratitude for the start of a new week.

Miller notes that you do not have to try everything at once. Residents can experiment with one or two ideas at a time and notice what makes them feel calmer, more focused, or more hopeful. For some, making the bed and clearing a small space may set the tone. For others, a short walk or a few deep breaths before checking email might be more powerful.

The goal is not to make Mondays perfect. Instead, Mindful Mondays give you a set of tools to soften the stress and build a healthier routine. Over time, those small habits can help you enjoy the present moment more often, not just at the beginning of the week.
