Wyandotte County residents will have an opportunity to safely dispose of unwanted household hazardous materials at a free collection event on Saturday, Sept. 20.
According to the Unified Government (UG), the Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Center will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 2443 S. 88th St. in Kansas City, Kansas. The program is free for county residents, though proof of residency such as a driver’s license or BPU bill is required. Waste from businesses and non-profits will not be accepted.
Residents are encouraged to arrive early, as the HHW site will close promptly at 1 p.m.
Accepted items include:
Auto batteries, used motor oil, brake fluid, carburetor cleaner, degreasers, gasoline, furniture stripper, solvent-based glues, latex and oil-based paints, paint thinner, putty, grout, caulk, roofing tar, stain, varnish, lacquer, aerosol products, drain and oven cleaners, mothballs, nail polish remover, spot remover, and small propane cylinders.
Not accepted items include:
Electronics, smoke detectors, ammunition, asbestos, explosives, infectious waste, radioactive materials, laboratory chemicals, and certain pesticides and preservatives. Items not accepted will be turned away at the event.
The UG noted that proper disposal helps protect local waterways and the environment while keeping homes safer.
