Late February Is the Right Time to Start Planning for Spring

While winter weather continues, late February offers an important opportunity to begin preparing for spring gardens and landscapes. Planning now can help homeowners and gardeners avoid common problems once the growing season begins.

Wyandotte County K-State Extension encourages residents to use this time to think through goals, space limitations, and maintenance strategies before planting starts. One of the most valuable early steps is soil testing. Understanding soil composition and nutrient levels helps guide fertilizer use, irrigation planning, and plant selection later in the season.

Extension educators note that soil testing provides a foundation for healthier growth and can prevent overuse of fertilizers or amendments that may not be needed. Many residents may qualify for free soil analysis through local Extension services.

Late February is also the ideal time to prune most deciduous trees while they remain dormant. Proper pruning can help control size and shape, improve airflow, reduce disease risk, and support future fruit production in species such as apples, pears, and peaches.

When pruning, Extension staff advise removing no more than one-third of the tree’s canopy and prioritizing safety. Branches that are damaged, crossing, or showing signs of decay should be addressed first. Larger or more complex jobs are best handled by certified, insured arborists.

By focusing on planning and maintenance now, residents can set the stage for healthier plants, fewer pest issues, and more successful gardens once spring arrives.
