UG Commission Approves New Start Time and Agenda Deadline for Meetings

Unified Government full commission meetings will now begin at 5:30 p.m., with agendas closing the Friday before each Thursday meeting, following a rules change approved Jan. 8.

The Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas Commission voted to amend its Rules of Procedure, formally changing when full commission meetings begin and when agendas are finalized.

Under the updated rules, full commission meetings will now start at 5:30 p.m. Agenda items must also be finalized by the Friday before a Thursday commission meeting, rather than later in the week.

The changes were adopted through an ordinance amending Sections 107 and 518 of the Commission’s Rules of Procedure.

Purpose of the Change

According to an executive memo provided to Commissioners, the amendments are intended to improve clarity and consistency in how commission meetings are scheduled and prepared.

The memo states that moving the start time and agenda deadline earlier allows for better coordination, clearer expectations for staff and Commissioners, and more predictable meeting operations. The changes were described as procedural and administrative in nature and do not carry any budget impact.

Why Agenda Timing Matters

Agenda deadlines affect how much time elected officials and residents have to review items before votes are taken. Earlier deadlines can give the public more opportunity to follow issues, prepare comments, or track items of interest ahead of meetings. Meeting start times also influence accessibility, particularly for residents who attend meetings in person or follow them live.

Permanent Update to Commission Rules

Unlike temporary scheduling adjustments, the ordinance permanently updates the Commission’s operating rules unless amended again in the future.

Full commission meetings are typically held twice each month on Thursdays, and the new start time and agenda deadline will now apply to those meetings going forward.

What Residents Should Know

Residents who follow commission business should note:

  • Meetings now begin at 5:30 p.m.
  • Agendas close the Friday before a Thursday meeting
  • Agendas, supporting materials, and meeting videos remain available through the Clerk’s Office and the online agenda system

Public participation options, including in-person and remote participation, remain unchanged.
