Unified Government partners with Mt. Carmel Redevelopment Corporation to provide overnight refuge.
Freezing temperatures will approach this weekend. The Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas (UG) is partnering with Mt. Carmel Redevelopment Corporation. They will open an overnight cold weather shelter at the Willa Gill Services Center. The center is located at 645 Nebraska Avenue in Kansas City, Kansas.
According to the Unified Government, the shelter will open on Sunday, November 9, in anticipation of the extreme cold. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., with guests allowed to begin lining up at 5:00 p.m. Space is limited to 40 adults on a first-come, first-served basis.
The shelter will be activated on nights when the temperature is forecasted to drop to 25 degrees Fahrenheit or below. Each guest will receive a warm meal, a sleeping mat, a blanket, and a tent to sleep in. A grab-and-go breakfast will also be provided before guests leave by 6:00 a.m.
The overnight shelter will be staffed by people from across the community. This includes those with experience in homeless services, behavioral health, and healthcare. Community members and individuals with lived experience will also participate.
Each morning by 8:00 a.m., the UG and Mt. Carmel team will determine whether the shelter will open again that evening. Information will be available by calling (913) 621-4690.
